Artist's Statement

When I was 7 years old, my mom signed me up for a series of craft classes at a local store. Little did I know that all these years later I would be a girl who can shear a sheep, spin balanced yarn, and weave my own fabric to create garments with.

Fiber was the chrysalis that took me from a painfully shy girl who looked like a deer in headlights anytime someone approached me to a young lady who has found her voice and the confidence to be heard.

Weaver

On Instagram the videos of me throwing a shuttle and changing shafts skyrocket, but ironically, the part I truly love the most would probably bore most people on social media to tears.

Digitally designing drafts until every last detail looks just like it did in my imagination excites me beyond belief. Being able to plan the exact fiber content to showcase the weave structure and determine factors such as the drape and luster of the finished fabric get my creative juices flowing.

Spinner

My spinning teacher, Julie Wilson, started class off by saying, “Spinning changes lives.” I couldn’t imagine how, but what do you know? She was right!

Spinning centers me. My mind runs a mile a minute on projects, color palettes, drafts, and more. But when that wheel starts turning and I am drafting dreamy fibers through my fingers… I am at peace.

Spinning is also what led me to weaving. I find it is the perfect medium to showcase beautifully handspun yarn.

Garment Designer

I was a minimalist before “sparking joy” was the thing to do and it definitely carries over into my garment design.

I love clean lines – even the ones you can’t see! The day I learned about French seams my life was forever changed!

Being able to design a garment that starts as roving, makes it onto bobbins, becomes a weft, and can then be tailored to fit my body like a glove is the ultimate challenge for me as a fiber artist.

And that truly does spark joy!

Etsy Conversations Podcast

In episode 352 – “Paving a Path to Success w/ Astrid of EweniqueAstrid” I share about my journey in branching out onto Etsy from Facebook Marketplace and finding success in building my business. I talk about how I drive traffic from Instagram to Etsy, using pre-orders to enhance the sales experience, and so much more!

Kaleidoscopic in Ashford Cotton

What is every fiber artist’s dream come true?  When Kate – THE Ashford Kate whose every word we hang on during YouTube videos – lets you run amok with some Ashford cotton and then write it up to share with other fiber lovers! I had an absolute blast creating this garment and can’t wait to share the highlights with you!

Handwoven Shoe Tutorial

One of my favorite things to do is stretch my imagination when it comes to uses for handwoven fabric. During the program night for our local guild, the guest presenter mentioned a collaboration with “I Can Make Shoes.” I immediately devoured the content on their YouTube channel and decided it would be a fun experiment with handwoven.
