Crochet by A is now Ewenique Astrid!

I started my Facebook page about 3 years ago when I had learned to crochet and wanted to share some of my fun projects. I had taken a class at JoAnn Fabrics and realized I loved all things yarn, but I didn’t really have a big plan for where it would go. I was 8 and having fun. But even when you don’t have a plan it is funny how things work out….
…… I started selling my creations – because how many scarves can a southern girl own?
…… Next was the blog with DIY tips and fiber adventures.
……. A year and a half ago I begged Julie Wilson from Jehovah Raah Farm to teach me to spin at Carolina Fiber Fest. She did and everything has changed since that day. I started spinning. Which led me to buy a spinning wheel (and then maybe a second wheel!) and boatloads of fiber.
…… I realized weaving was the perfect medium for Handwoven yarn. One weaving loom quickly became two weaving looms.
…… I also took a class at Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair on needle felting and that was a big rabbit hole I went down.
…… I decided fiber is even more fun when you get to snuggle the sheep first! I sheared sheep with Miss Julie and then spent hours and hours processing my raw fleece into beautiful roving with Miss Ann and Miss Alesia at Shepherd’s Gate Mill before we moved from North Carolina.
…… Oh yes, and there was that time I decided to do my science fair project on avid dyeing animal fiber and, let’s just say, I might be the only 11yo with a ginormous stock pot and a hot plate now.
It all grew into so much more than I ever imagined and it was all amazing!!! But after a little while I didn’t feel like Crochet by A fit me anymore. I still love crochet and it was the magical thing that sparked my love of fiber and sent me on this magical journey, but last year I decided it was time to find a name that better fit my overall love of fiber. That was the easy part. Deciding on a name was a gazillion times harder!!!
I’d sit with my mom and brainstorm options. I wanted something broader, but still related to fiber. I liked the idea of using a play on words, but it seemed like all the good ones were already being used. I had a few words I liked and spent hours googling synonyms for those words. I liked the idea of using my name because it reflects my Bohemian soul perfectly. I had a pile of scraps of paper with scribed ideas on them, but nothing stuck.
Then one day Ewenique Astrid popped out of my mouth during a rapid fire, impromptu brainstorming session and it was like lightning bolt. Yes!!!!!!! That’s the name. By that night I was on Fiverr ordering a logo and planning what needed to be done to prepare for this big announcement.
Ewenique described me well… and managed to achieve the play on words I was after. I’m a fiber-loving, quirky cat, creative spirit and I love the new name. I feel like it will last me for years and years and I am so excited to finally be able to share it with you.
With my name change comes another exciting update! I now have an online store now too. Check it out here! I have some beautiful handwoven and crocheted items on my site that are ready to ship. I hope you find something you love!!
